Assistant-message prefill returns 400 on Claude Opus 4.6 and later — use structured outputs instead
Before:
messages=[{"role":"user","content":"Extract the fields"},
{"role":"assistant","content":"{"}]
After (structured outputs):
client.messages.create(model="claude-opus-5-5", max_tokens=4000,
messages=[{"role":"user","content":"Extract the fields"}],
output_config={"format": {"type": "json_schema", "schema": SCHEMA}})
Or move the formatting instruction into the system prompt. On Amazon Bedrock, structured outputs aren't available for Opus 5.5, so use system-prompt instructions there.
Symptom
The old trick of ending messages with a partial assistant turn (e.g. {"role": "assistant", "content": "{"} to force JSON) returns HTTP 400 on Claude Opus 4.6 and every later Opus model, including claude-opus-5-5.
Cause
Prefilling assistant messages is not supported on Claude Opus 4.6+ (it still worked on Opus 4.5 and earlier). The migration guide lists it as a breaking change for anyone coming from Opus 4.5 or older.
Verify
The last message in messages has role: user (or a tool result); request returns 200.
