tool_choice: type "tool" and "any" are not supported for this model. — forced tool use rejected on Claude Opus 5.5
tool_choice: type "tool" and "any" are not supported for this model.
Use tool_choice: {"type": "auto"} with strict tool use, or structured outputs, and say in the prompt when the tool applies:
tools=[{"name": "extract", "strict": True,
"input_schema": {"type": "object", "properties": {...},
"required": [...], "additionalProperties": False}}]
tool_choice={"type": "auto"}
# or: output_config={"format": {"type": "json_schema", "schema": {...}}}
Strict mode requires additionalProperties: false on every object. On Amazon Bedrock, structured outputs (incl. strict tools) aren't available for Opus 5.5: send auto without strict and validate the tool input in code.
Symptom
A request with tool_choice: {"type": "tool", "name": "extract"} or {"type": "any"} (the classic way to force JSON extraction through a tool) returns 400 on claude-opus-5-5, including on the token-counting endpoint: tool_choice: type "tool" and "any" are not supported for this model.
Cause
Forced tool choice is not supported on Claude Opus 5.5 (Opus 4.8 / 4.7 / Opus 5 still accept it).
Verify
Request returns 200; the response contains a tool_use block whose input validates against the schema.
