"thinking.type.enabled" is not supported for this model. — budget_tokens extended thinking removed on Claude Opus 4.7+
"thinking.type.enabled" is not supported for this model.
Before:
client.beta.messages.create(model="claude-opus-4-5-20251101", max_tokens=16000,
thinking={"type": "enabled", "budget_tokens": 10000}, messages=msgs)
After:
client.messages.create(model="claude-opus-5-5", max_tokens=16000,
thinking={"type": "adaptive"}, # optional on Opus 5.5 (always on)
output_config={"effort": "high"}, # low | medium | high | xhigh | max
messages=msgs)
Use client.messages.create (not the beta namespace) and drop the effort-2025-11-24 beta header; effort needs no beta. Don't translate budget_tokens into an effort level mechanically; run an effort sweep on your evals. At xhigh/max, start max_tokens at 64k.
Symptom
A request with thinking: {"type": "enabled", "budget_tokens": 10000} (the extended-thinking pattern from Claude 3.7 / Claude 4 docs) returns HTTP 400 on claude-opus-5-5: "thinking.type.enabled" is not supported for this model.
Cause
Manual extended thinking (type: enabled + budget_tokens) is deprecated on Claude Opus 4.6 / Sonnet 4.6 and not accepted on Claude Opus 4.7 and later models. Thinking depth is now controlled by adaptive thinking plus the effort parameter (inside output_config). On Claude Opus 5.5 adaptive thinking is always on.
Verify
The request returns 200 and content begins with thinking blocks; select text blocks by type, not by index.
