Prisma 7 no longer auto-loads .env — DATABASE_URL is undefined unless you import dotenv

Fix
npm install dotenv

prisma.config.ts:

import 'dotenv/config'
import { defineConfig, env } from 'prisma/config'

export default defineConfig({
  schema: 'prisma/schema.prisma',
  datasource: { url: env('DATABASE_URL') },
})

And in the runtime entry point (or the module that creates PrismaClient):

import 'dotenv/config'

Alternatively use Node's built-in loader: node --env-file=.env server.js.

Gotcha: env() from prisma/config throws if the variable is undefined, and every CLI command (including prisma generate, which needs no DB) loads prisma.config.ts. In CI builds without a DB URL, use url: process.env.DATABASE_URL ?? '' instead of env('DATABASE_URL').

Symptom

After upgrading to Prisma 7, CLI commands or the app behave as if DATABASE_URL is unset (connection to undefined/empty URL, env() validation failing in prisma.config.ts) even though .env exists. Wrong assumption: Prisma CLI and Prisma Client read .env automatically (true through Prisma 6).

Cause

Prisma ORM 7.0.0 (2025-11-19): environment variables are no longer loaded automatically. prisma.config.ts now holds the datasource URL via its env() helper but does not load .env itself. Bun loads .env natively, so Bun users are unaffected.

Verify

npx prisma migrate status connects; console.log(!!process.env.DATABASE_URL) prints true before new PrismaClient(...).
