Bun 1.4: running as node (bun --bun, bunx --bun, node symlink) no longer auto-loads .env files

Fix

Pass the env file explicitly with --env-file (the release note: passing --env-file keeps them loaded):

# before (package.json script "migrate" runs a CLI under bun-as-node)
bun --bun run migrate
# after
bun --bun --env-file=.env run migrate

Or load it in code (import 'dotenv/config'), or set the variables in the real environment (preferred in CI/containers). Running the entry directly as bun ./scripts/migrate.ts still auto-loads .env. Frameworks that read .env themselves (e.g. Next.js, Vite) are unaffected.

Symptom

After upgrading to Bun 1.4, process.env.DATABASE_URL (or any .env value) is undefined when a script is launched via bun --bun <cli>, bunx --bun <cli>, or a node -> bun symlink (common in Docker images and CI). The same script run as bun file.ts still sees the variables. Pre-1.4 knowledge says "Bun always loads .env automatically".

Cause

Bun 1.4 (2026-08-20): Bun invoked as node "no longer loads .env, .env.local, or .env.{development,production,test}", matching Node.js behaviour. Plain bun file.js still loads them.

Verify

Temporarily log Boolean(process.env.DATABASE_URL) at the entry point; it prints true with --env-file and false without it under --bun.
