Prisma 7: migrate dev / db push no longer run generate or seed; --skip-generate and --skip-seed removed
Before (package.json):
{
"prisma": { "seed": "tsx prisma/seed.ts" },
"scripts": { "db:migrate": "prisma migrate dev --skip-seed" }
}
After — prisma.config.ts:
import 'dotenv/config'
import { defineConfig, env } from 'prisma/config'
export default defineConfig({
schema: 'prisma/schema.prisma',
migrations: { path: 'prisma/migrations', seed: 'tsx prisma/seed.ts' },
datasource: { url: env('DATABASE_URL') },
})
package.json scripts:
{
"scripts": {
"postinstall": "prisma generate",
"db:migrate": "prisma migrate dev && prisma generate",
"db:seed": "prisma db seed"
}
}
In CI/Docker builds, run npx prisma generate explicitly before tsc/next build.
Symptom
After upgrading to Prisma 7: prisma migrate dev applies migrations but the client types are stale (new fields missing), the seed script never runs after migrate dev/migrate reset, npm install no longer produces a client, and scripts using --skip-generate / --skip-seed fail with an unknown-flag error. Wrong assumption: migrate runs generate and seed implicitly and postinstall generates the client.
Cause
Prisma ORM 7.0.0 (2025-11-19) removed implicit commands: the postinstall hook no longer runs prisma generate; prisma migrate dev/db push no longer run generate; migrate dev/migrate reset no longer run the seed. The flags --skip-generate (migrate dev, db push) and --skip-seed (migrate dev) were removed. The prisma key in package.json (where seed used to live) was removed — the seed command now lives in prisma.config.ts. Also removed: prisma introspect (use db pull), db execute --schema/--url, migrate diff --from-url/--to-url/--from-schema-datasource/--to-schema-datasource (use --from-config-datasource / --to-config-datasource).
Verify
After npm run db:migrate, new model fields appear in the generated client types; npx prisma db seed runs the seed.
