drizzle-kit 1.0 (rc): migrations folder v3 drops _journal.json — run `drizzle-kit up` before generate/migrate

Fix
npm i drizzle-orm@rc
npm i -D drizzle-kit@rc
npx drizzle-kit up # converts the old migrations folder to v3

drizzle-kit up also adds name (text) and applied_at (timestamptz) columns to the migrations table; existing rows get applied_at = NULL. To keep push/pull limited to specific schemas:

export default defineConfig({
  dialect: 'postgresql',
  schema: './src/db/schema.ts',
  schemaFilter: ['public', 'app_*'],
})

Preview push SQL with npx drizzle-kit push --explain. Commit the converted folder in one change so every branch/environment upgrades together.

Symptom

After upgrading drizzle-kit/drizzle-orm to the 1.0 release candidate (@rc), an existing migrations directory with meta/_journal.json and flat 0000_xxx.sql files no longer matches what the CLI/migrator expects; drizzle-kit drop is gone; push/pull suddenly touch schemas other than public; push --strict is rejected. Wrong assumption: the 0.x migrations layout and CLI flags carry over.

Cause

Drizzle 1.0 (rc.1 published 2026-04-30; npm latest still 0.45.x as of 2026-10) introduced migration folder structure v3: journal.json removed, each migration's SQL and snapshot grouped in its own folder, snapshots are DDL-based, migrations are matched by full folder name (not timestamp), and the migrator applies every missing migration rather than only newer ones. drizzle-kit drop and push --strict were removed (confirmation before data loss is now the default; --force skips it). schemaFilter now defaults to all schemas and supports globs.

Verify

No meta/_journal.json remains; npx drizzle-kit generate produces a new per-migration folder; npx drizzle-kit migrate on a copy of prod applies nothing unexpected.
