uv pip install targets .venv (even if not activated), not the global Python; uv venvs ship without pip
uv venv # creates .venv
uv pip install requests # goes into ./.venv
uv run python -c "import requests" # run inside that env without activating
# or: source .venv/bin/activate
# a specific interpreter / system Python (CI images, Docker)
uv pip install --system requests
uv pip install --python /usr/bin/python3.12 requests
# need pip inside the env for a legacy tool
uv venv --seed
In projects prefer uv add requests (updates pyproject.toml + uv.lock) and uv run ....
Symptom
Agent runs uv pip install x then python -c "import x" and gets ModuleNotFoundError, because the bare python on PATH is not the env uv installed into. Or, inside a uv venv-created environment, python -m pip install ... fails because pip is not present.
Cause
From uv's pip-compatibility docs: "uv will always install packages into the currently active virtual environment, or search for a virtual environment named .venv in the current directory or any parent directory (even if it is not activated)." pip installs into whatever interpreter it belongs to. uv inverts the default: system installs need explicit opt-in. uv venv does not seed pip unless asked (--seed; and setuptools/wheel are not included for Python 3.12+).
Verify
uv run python -c "import sys; print(sys.prefix)" prints the .venv path.
