Docker Compose jumped from v2.x to v5.0 (Dec 2025): no v3/v4, and the internal builder was removed in favor of Bake

Fix

No command changes: keep using docker compose .... Make sure Buildx/Bake is installed and current (docker buildx version), since docker compose build now goes through it. Remove version: from compose files; it has no relation to the CLI version.

Symptom

docker compose version prints v5.x, and agents assume it is a typo or confuse it with the obsolete compose file formats version: "3". Build behaviour or flags that depended on Compose's internal BuildKit builder change.

Cause

Compose v5.0.0 "Mont Blanc" was released 2025-12-02. From the release notes: Docker skipped 3.0.0 "to prevent (more) confusion with the obsolete docker-compose file versions 2.x and 3.x" and skipped 4.0.0 as well. Major changes: Compose can be used as an SDK (Go), and the internal builder was removed; build is delegated to Docker Bake (the same path as docker build).

Verify

docker compose version and docker buildx bake --help both work; docker compose build succeeds.
