Auth.js v5: NEXTAUTH_SECRET / NEXTAUTH_URL → AUTH_SECRET; AUTH_URL usually unnecessary; AUTH_<PROVIDER>_ID auto-detected

import GitHub from "next-auth/providers/github"
export const { auth, handlers, signIn, signOut } = NextAuth({ providers: [GitHub] }) // no clientId/clientSecret needed
Behind a proxy or on a custom domain where host detection fails, set AUTH_URL (and AUTH_TRUST_HOST=true if needed).
Symptom
An agent sets NEXTAUTH_SECRET and NEXTAUTH_URL and passes clientId: process.env.GITHUB_ID by hand in a v5 (Auth.js) project, following v4 tutorials.
Cause
The v5 migration guide says: "All environment variables should be prefixed with AUTH_, NEXTAUTH_ is no longer in use." AUTH_SECRET is the only variable that is really required. The host is inferred from request headers, so AUTH_URL is usually unnecessary. Provider credentials named AUTH_{PROVIDER}_ID / AUTH_{PROVIDER}_SECRET are picked up automatically. (The guide also says there are "no breaking changes to the environment variables". These are the documented best practices.)
Verify
Sign-in works with the provider config left empty. npx auth secret writes AUTH_SECRET to .env.local.
