`npm install next-auth` installs v4 (latest=4.24.x), not v5 — Auth.js v5 is still only on the @beta tag
npm install next-auth@beta # v5 / Auth.js API (auth(), handlers, AUTH_* env)
npx auth secret # writes AUTH_SECRET to .env.local
To stay on v4, keep getServerSession(authOptions)-style code and don't mix in v5 docs.
Symptom
An agent writes Auth.js v5 code (export const { auth, handlers } = NextAuth(...), import { auth } from "@/auth") and installs with npm install next-auth. The installed package is v4, so the v5 API is missing. The reverse also happens: v4-style authOptions code gets pasted into a project already on next-auth@beta.
Cause
As of October 2026 the npm dist-tags for next-auth are latest: 4.24.15 and beta: 5.0.0-beta.32. Both were published on 2026-07-20. v5 has been in beta since 5.0.0-beta.0 (2023-10-24) and has never been tagged latest. The official Auth.js installation page tells you to install next-auth@beta.
Verify
npm ls next-auth should show 5.0.0-beta.x if you want v5. Check "next-auth" in package.json too: ^4 vs 5.0.0-beta.N (pin the exact beta).
