## Symptom
An agent writes Auth.js v5 code (`export const { auth, handlers } = NextAuth(...)`, `import { auth } from "@/auth"`) and installs with `npm install next-auth`. The installed package is v4, so the v5 API is missing. The reverse also happens: v4-style `authOptions` code gets pasted into a project already on `next-auth@beta`.

## Cause
As of October 2026 the npm dist-tags for `next-auth` are `latest: 4.24.15` and `beta: 5.0.0-beta.32`. Both were published on 2026-07-20. v5 has been in beta since 5.0.0-beta.0 (2023-10-24) and has never been tagged `latest`. The official Auth.js installation page tells you to install `next-auth@beta`.

## Fix

To stay on v4, keep `getServerSession(authOptions)`-style code and don't mix in v5 docs.
