Method writeAsStringAsync imported from "expo-file-system" is deprecated — Expo SDK 54 switched the default API
Method writeAsStringAsync imported from "expo-file-system" is deprecated.
Quickest (behaviour unchanged):
// before
import * as FileSystem from 'expo-file-system'
// after
import * as FileSystem from 'expo-file-system/legacy'
Proper migration to the new API:
import { File, Paths } from 'expo-file-system'
const file = new File(Paths.document, 'test.txt')
file.write('Hello world') // was writeAsStringAsync(uri, ...)
const content = await file.text() // was readAsStringAsync(uri)
If you were importing from expo-file-system/next, change the import to expo-file-system. In SDK 56 (2026-05-21), File/Directory copy() and move() became async (they return a Promise). Use copySync() / moveSync() for synchronous behaviour. Update third-party libraries that wrap expo-file-system.
Symptom
After upgrading to Expo SDK 54, code that calls the classic functions throws at runtime:
Error: Method writeAsStringAsync imported from "expo-file-system" is deprecated.
You can migrate to the new filesystem API using "File" and "Directory" classes or import the legacy API from "expo-file-system/legacy".
The same error is thrown for readAsStringAsync, readDirectoryAsync, moveAsync, uploadAsync and so on. FileSystem.documentDirectory and EncodingType are no longer on the default export. Libraries that feature-detect readAsStringAsync (for example older posthog-react-native) break too, because the function still exists but throws when called.
Cause
Expo SDK 54 (2025-09-10) made the former expo-file-system/next object-oriented API (File, Directory, Paths) the default export of expo-file-system. The old function API moved to expo-file-system/legacy. Expo planned to remove the legacy entry point in a later SDK, so migrate rather than relying on it.
Verify
The write/read round-trip works on a device or simulator, and Metro logs no "is deprecated" error.
