Expo SDK 55+: Legacy Architecture is gone — newArchEnabled was removed from app.json, cannot opt out

Fix
  • Delete newArchEnabled from app.json / app.config.ts.
  • Upgrade libraries to versions that support the New Architecture. Reanimated 4 (which uses react-native-worklets) supports only the New Architecture, so drop any plan to stay on Reanimated 3 when moving past SDK 54.
  • Run npx expo install --fix and npx expo-doctor to align versions.
  • If a critical library has no New Architecture support, stay on SDK 54 until it does. There is no flag on 55+.

Symptom

An agent sets "newArchEnabled": false in app.json (or newArchEnabled=false in gradle.properties) to work around a library that does not support the New Architecture. On Expo SDK 55+ this has no effect: the option is no longer part of the config, and the app still runs on the New Architecture. Libraries that only support the Legacy Architecture fail at runtime or at build time.

Cause

  • SDK 53 (2025-04-30): New Architecture on by default, opt-out still possible.
  • SDK 54 (2025-09-10, RN 0.81): the final release with Legacy Architecture support.
  • SDK 55 (2026-02-25, RN 0.83, React 19.2): dropped the Legacy Architecture and removed newArchEnabled from app.json. React Native 0.82+ cannot opt out at all. Also in SDK 55: Expo packages are versioned with the SDK major (for example expo-camera@^55.0.0), and supported Node versions are ^20.19.4, ^22.13.0, ^24.3.0 and ^25.0.0.

Verify

npx expo-doctor passes, and npx expo prebuild --clean && npx expo run:android / run:ios builds and starts the app.
