Expo SDK 54/55: Android edge-to-edge is mandatory — StatusBar backgroundColor/translucent and edgeToEdgeEnabled no-op
Pad content with safe-area insets instead of colouring the system bars:
import { SafeAreaProvider, SafeAreaView } from 'react-native-safe-area-context'
export default function App() {
return (
<SafeAreaProvider>
<SafeAreaView style={{ flex: 1 }} edges={['top', 'bottom']}>
{/* screens */}
</SafeAreaView>
</SafeAreaProvider>
)
}
Or use useSafeAreaInsets() to pad specific views. Use <StatusBar style="dark" /> (icon colour only) and draw your own background behind the bar. Remove edgeToEdgeEnabled and the deprecated androidStatusBar / androidNavigationBar keys from app.json. If you use the react-native-edge-to-edge config plugin, install it as a direct dependency (npx expo install react-native-edge-to-edge).
Symptom
On Android, content draws under the status bar and navigation bar. <StatusBar backgroundColor="#fff" translucent={false} />, NavigationBar.setBackgroundColorAsync(), androidStatusBar.backgroundColor and edgeToEdgeEnabled: false in app.json all have no effect. Agents keep adding these props, or React Native's <SafeAreaView>, to "fix" the overlap.
Cause
Android 16 removed the edge-to-edge opt-out. Expo SDK 53 (2025-04-30) enabled edge-to-edge for new projects. SDK 54 (2025-09-10, RN 0.81, targets Android 16 / API 36) enabled it in all Android apps and it cannot be disabled. SDK 55 (2026-02-25) removed edgeToEdgeEnabled from app.json, made most expo-navigation-bar methods and the expo-status-bar backgroundColor / translucent / networkActivityIndicatorVisible props no-ops, and deprecated androidStatusBar / androidNavigationBar in app.json in favour of the expo-status-bar / expo-navigation-bar config plugins. SDK 54 also deprecated React Native's <SafeAreaView>.
Verify
On an Android 15/16 emulator, headers sit below the status bar and bottom controls sit above the gesture bar, in both light and dark mode.
