Accessing element.ref is no longer supported. ref is now a regular prop — React 19 ref-as-prop, forwardRef not needed
Accessing element.ref is no longer supported. ref is now a regular prop. It will be removed from the JSX Element type in a future release.
- const MyInput = forwardRef(function MyInput({placeholder}, ref) {
- return <input placeholder={placeholder} ref={ref} />;
- });
+ function MyInput({placeholder, ref}) {
+ return <input placeholder={placeholder} ref={ref} />;
+ }
TypeScript: type it as a prop, e.g. { ref?: React.Ref<HTMLInputElement> } or React.ComponentProps<'input'>.
Reading another element's ref:
- const childRef = child.ref;
+ const childRef = child.props.ref;
If the warning comes from a dependency, upgrade it.
Symptom
Code (often a library doing React.cloneElement / reading child.ref) logs Accessing element.ref is no longer supported. ref is now a regular prop.... Separately, agents still wrap every new component in forwardRef out of habit.
Cause
React 19 (stable 2024-12-05) passes ref to function components as a normal prop. element.ref is deprecated (read element.props.ref). forwardRef is no longer needed for function components and React says it will be deprecated and removed in a future version. Refs passed to class components are still not props.
Verify
<MyInput ref={r} /> sets r.current to the input; the element.ref warning no longer appears.
