Homebrew 6+: brew install from a third-party tap fails until you `brew trust` the tap or formula

Fix

Installing by fully qualified name trusts only that item:

brew install vendor/tools/sometool
brew install --cask vendor/tools/someapp

Short names after tapping need explicit trust:

brew tap vendor/tools
brew trust --formula vendor/tools/sometool # or --cask / --command
brew install sometool
# whole tap (all current and future items):
brew trust vendor/tools

Trust the canonical formula name; aliases and renames do not carry trust. In a Brewfile use the trusted: option (see the brew bundle docs).

Symptom

A script that ran brew tap vendor/tools && brew install sometool (short name) fails on a machine with current Homebrew; brew doctor warns about untrusted non-official taps. CI setup scripts written for Homebrew 4/5 break.

Cause

Homebrew 6.0.0 (2026-06-11) introduced tap trust: taps contain arbitrary Ruby, so non-official taps must be explicitly trusted before Homebrew evaluates their code. Docs: "Commands that need to load an untrusted tap or item will fail until the relevant trust is granted." Official taps stay trusted. HOMEBREW_NO_REQUIRE_TAP_TRUST=1 is deprecated and will be removed.

Verify

brew trust lists the entry; brew untrust (no args) lists what is still untrusted; brew doctor no longer warns.
