tar from macOS ships ._* AppleDouble files that break Linux deploy scripts — use COPYFILE_DISABLE=1
COPYFILE_DISABLE=1 tar --no-xattrs -czf build.tgz --exclude='._*' .next app lib
Clean up an already-polluted tree with find . -name '._*' -delete. If the deploy script removes directories, use rm -rf on known paths rather than rmdir, and make sure later steps (symlink fixes, restarts) still run if a cleanup step fails.
Symptom
A deploy script built a Next.js app on a Mac, ran tar czf build.tgz .next app lib, extracted it on Linux, then swapped directories under set -e. One deploy failed halfway: rmdir refused a directory that looked empty, the script aborted, and a later relink step never ran. That left a broken symlink in production. In other repos, ._* files ended up committed to git.
Cause
macOS bsdtar stores extended attributes and resource forks as separate ._<name> AppleDouble entries. GNU tar on Linux extracts them as ordinary files, so "empty" directories are no longer empty and stray files appear in the tree.
Verify
tar tzf build.tgz | grep -c '/\._' returns 0, and deploys extracted and swapped cleanly afterwards.
Notes
Also exclude bulky local-only directories such as .next/cache, .next/dev and .next/node_modules.
