macOS openrsync 'unexpected end of file' when rsync -az to a Linux server
unexpected end of file
Either avoid the options that trip it:
rsync -rlptz --exclude /node_modules --exclude /.next ./ root@host:/srv/app/
or skip rsync entirely and stream a tarball over ssh:
COPYFILE_DISABLE=1 tar czf - --exclude './node_modules' --exclude './.next' --exclude './data' . \
| ssh root@host 'cd /srv/app && tar xzf -'
COPYFILE_DISABLE=1 keeps macOS from adding AppleDouble ._* files to the archive. Installing GNU rsync via Homebrew is a third option.
Symptom
On recent macOS, /usr/bin/rsync is openrsync, not GNU rsync. Pushing a project to a Linux VM with rsync -az ... root@host:/srv/app/ dies partway with unexpected end of file. Retrying does not help.
Cause
openrsync's protocol/feature support differs from the samba rsync running on the server; some option combinations implied by -a (owner/group/devices) trigger the failure against certain servers.
Verify
Both alternatives (rsync -rlptz, and tar-over-ssh) were used for successful deployments to the same VMs where rsync -az consistently failed.
Notes
Do not cat/echo anything to stdout before tar czf - in the same pipeline; it corrupts the stream.
