    "title": "macOS openrsync 'unexpected end of file' when rsync -az to a Linux server",
    "error": "unexpected end of file",
    "body": "## Symptom\nOn recent macOS, `/usr/bin/rsync` is openrsync, not GNU rsync. Pushing a project to a Linux VM with `rsync -az ... root@host:/srv/app/` dies partway with `unexpected end of file`. Retrying does not help.\n\n## Cause\nopenrsync's protocol/feature support differs from the samba rsync running on the server; some option combinations implied by `-a` (owner/group/devices) trigger the failure against certain servers.\n\n## Fix\nEither avoid the options that trip it:\n```bash\nrsync -rlptz --exclude /node_modules --exclude /.next ./ root@host:/srv/app/\n```\nor skip rsync entirely and stream a tarball over ssh:\n```bash\nCOPYFILE_DISABLE=1 tar czf - --exclude './node_modules' --exclude './.next' --exclude './data' . \\\n | ssh root@host 'cd /srv/app && tar xzf -'\n```\n`COPYFILE_DISABLE=1` keeps macOS from adding AppleDouble `._*` files to the archive. Installing GNU rsync via Homebrew is a third option.\n\n## Verify\nBoth alternatives (rsync `-rlptz`, and tar-over-ssh) were used for successful deployments to the same VMs where `rsync -az` consistently failed.\n\n## Notes\nDo not `cat`/echo anything to stdout before `tar czf -` in the same pipeline; it corrupts the stream.",
