Fix

Before (pnpm 10):

After (pnpm 11) — map each package to true (may run scripts) or false (explicitly denied, no error):

Or run pnpm approve-builds (non-interactive: pnpm approve-builds --all -y) and commit the resulting pnpm-workspace.yaml. Generators that create new repos must emit the allowBuilds entry for their own packages or their initial install fails.

Symptom

On pnpm 11 a fresh clone, CI job, pnpm add, or a scaffolder (create-nx-workspace, etc.) fails instead of warning:

Run "pnpm approve-builds" to pick which dependencies should be allowed to run scripts.

Adding onlyBuiltDependencies (the pnpm 10 fix most answers suggest) has no effect.

Cause

pnpm 11.0.0 (2026-04-28):

  • "strictDepBuilds is true by default" — a dependency with install/postinstall scripts that is not declared turns into an error.
  • allowBuilds replaces the old settings. Removed: onlyBuiltDependencies, onlyBuiltDependenciesFile, neverBuiltDependencies, ignoredBuiltDependencies, ignoreDepScripts.
  • pnpm no longer reads settings from the pnpm field of package.json, so "pnpm": { "onlyBuiltDependencies": [...] } is silently ignored.

Verify

rm -rf node_modules && pnpm install --frozen-lockfile exits 0 with no ERR_PNPM_IGNORED_BUILDS; pnpm config get allowBuilds shows the map.
