updateTag can only be called from within a Server Action: use revalidateTag(tag, 'max') in Route Handlers

updateTag can only be called from within a Server Action
Fix

Before:

// app/api/revalidate/route.ts
import { updateTag } from 'next/cache'
export async function POST() {
  updateTag('posts') // throws
  return Response.json({ ok: true })
}

After:

import { revalidateTag } from 'next/cache'
export async function POST() {
  revalidateTag('posts', 'max') // stale-while-revalidate
  return Response.json({ ok: true })
}

Keep updateTag for 'use server' actions where the user expects to see their change right away. To refresh uncached data shown elsewhere on the page from an action, Next.js 16 also adds refresh() from next/cache.

Symptom

You replace a deprecated one-argument revalidateTag('posts') with updateTag('posts') in a Route Handler (for example a CMS webhook app/api/revalidate/route.ts) and it throws: updateTag can only be called from within a Server Action.

Cause

updateTag is new in Next.js 16 (2025-10-21) and is Server Actions only. It immediately expires the tag so the next read waits for fresh data (read-your-own-writes). It cannot be used in Route Handlers, Client Components or anywhere else. revalidateTag (now revalidateTag(tag, profile)) is the API for Route Handlers and webhooks.

Verify

POST the webhook and it returns 200 with no thrown error. Pages tagged posts show new content on a later request.
