Next.js 16: revalidateTag(tag) single-argument form is deprecated, pass a cacheLife profile: revalidateTag(tag, 'max')
Before:
import { revalidateTag } from 'next/cache'
revalidateTag('posts')
After, if eventual consistency is fine (webhooks, CMS publishes, Route Handlers):
revalidateTag('posts', 'max')
// or
revalidateTag('products', { expire: 3600 })
After, if the user must see their own write immediately (inside a Server Action only):
'use server'
import { updateTag } from 'next/cache'
export async function savePost() {
await db.post.update(...)
updateTag('posts')
}
Symptom
Code written for Next.js 13–15 calls revalidateTag('posts'). On Next.js 16 TypeScript reports an error on the call (wrong number of arguments) and the docs mark the one-argument form deprecated. Agents also expect revalidateTag to behave like an immediate purge. With a profile it is stale-while-revalidate instead.
Cause
Next.js 16 (2025-10-21) changed the signature so a second argument, a cacheLife profile, is required: a built-in name such as 'max', 'hours' or 'days', a custom profile from next.config, or an inline { expire: seconds }. With a profile, revalidateTag marks entries stale and serves cached data while it refetches in the background (SWR). The single-argument legacy form behaves like the new updateTag (immediate expiry). It is deprecated and fails type-checking.
Verify
tsc --noEmit is clean. After a Route Handler calls revalidateTag('posts','max'), the first request may still get the old data and a later request gets fresh data. That is expected SWR behaviour.
