New Gemini API projects can't rely on gemini-2.5-pro/flash: access limited to past users
For new projects use the models Google recommends: gemini-3.8-flash or gemini-3.5-flash-lite; for pro-tier reasoning gemini-3.1-pro-preview (listed replacement for the 2.5 pro previews). gemini-3-pro-preview was shut down 2026-03-09.
Symptom
An agent picks gemini-2.5-pro or gemini-2.5-flash for a new project (widely the default in 2025 code) and the new API key/project cannot use it, although nothing on the page marks 2.5 as deprecated.
Cause
Google's deprecations page (as of 2026-10-14): "we are limiting access to the 2.5 models to users who have actively used them in the past" and "These models are not deprecated and will continue to be served until further notice through the API." The dated 2.5 preview snapshots (gemini-2.5-pro-preview-03-25/05-06/06-05, gemini-2.5-flash-preview-05-20/09-25) are already shut down.
Verify
Call client.models.list() with the project's key and confirm the model is listed.
