Tailwind v4 ignores tailwind.config.js — custom colors/fonts vanish; move them to @theme or load with @config
Preferred: declare theme values as CSS variables in @theme in the stylesheet that imports Tailwind.
Before (tailwind.config.js):
module.exports = {
theme: { extend: {
colors: { avocado: { 500: 'oklch(0.84 0.18 117.33)' } },
fontFamily: { display: ['Satoshi', 'sans-serif'] },
screens: { '3xl': '1920px' },
} },
}
After (app.css):
@import "tailwindcss";
@theme {
--color-avocado-500: oklch(0.84 0.18 117.33);
--font-display: "Satoshi", "sans-serif";
--breakpoint-3xl: 1920px;
}
Stopgap: keep the JS file and load it explicitly from CSS:
@import "tailwindcss";
@config "../../tailwind.config.js";
Plugins move to CSS too: @plugin "@tailwindcss/typography";. The official codemod npx @tailwindcss/upgrade (Node 20+) can perform this migration.
Symptom
After moving to Tailwind v4, custom theme values from tailwind.config.js (e.g. bg-brand-500, font-display, extra breakpoints) generate no CSS, or @apply of them errors with Cannot apply unknown utility class. The config file is still on disk but nothing reads it. Agents often 'fix' this by editing theme.extend further, which has no effect.
Cause
Tailwind CSS v4.0 (2025-01-22) is configured CSS-first. JavaScript config files are still supported for backward compatibility but are no longer detected automatically. The corePlugins, safelist and separator options are not supported at all in v4.
Verify
bg-avocado-500 / font-display / 3xl: produce CSS; in DevTools :root exposes --color-avocado-500.
