Tailwind v4 with plain webpack: use the @tailwindcss/webpack loader (v4.2+) instead of postcss-loader + tailwindcss
npm install tailwindcss @tailwindcss/webpack css-loader mini-css-extract-plugin
// webpack.config.js
const MiniCssExtractPlugin = require('mini-css-extract-plugin')
module.exports = {
plugins: [new MiniCssExtractPlugin()],
module: {
rules: [
{
test: /\.css$/i,
use: [MiniCssExtractPlugin.loader, 'css-loader', '@tailwindcss/webpack'],
},
],
},
}
/* src/index.css */
@import 'tailwindcss';
Loader options: base (directory to scan for class candidates, defaults to cwd) and optimize (minify, defaults to true in production). Remove tailwindcss/autoprefixer from any postcss.config if you switch.
Symptom
In a custom webpack 5 project an agent wires Tailwind v4 the v3 way (postcss-loader with tailwindcss in postcss.config), which fails with the "trying to use tailwindcss directly as a PostCSS plugin" error, or assumes PostCSS is the only webpack route.
Cause
Tailwind CSS v4.2.0 (released 2026-02-18) added a first-party @tailwindcss/webpack package: a webpack loader that runs Tailwind directly, analogous to @tailwindcss/vite. Before 4.2 the only webpack route was postcss-loader + @tailwindcss/postcss, which still works.
Verify
npx webpack --mode development emits a CSS file containing the utilities used in your sources.
