Node.js 20 reached end-of-life on 2026-04-30 — don't scaffold Node 20 in engines, CI, or Dockerfiles

Fix
- "engines": { "node": ">=18" }
+ "engines": { "node": ">=22" }
# .github/workflows/ci.yml
- node-version: 20
+ node-version: 24
- FROM node:20-alpine
+ FROM node:24-alpine

When jumping from 20 to 22/24/26 check: import assertions assert removed (use with), Node 24 bundles npm 11, Node 25+ enables localStorage globally and removed SlowBuffer/fs.rmdir recursive, Node 26 removed --experimental-transform-types.

Symptom

An agent writes "engines": { "node": ">=20" }, node-version: 20 in GitHub Actions, or FROM node:20-alpine, treating Node 20 as the safe LTS (and Node 18 as the minimum). Both are past end-of-life and get no security fixes.

Cause

Per the Node.js release schedule: Node 18 'Hydrogen' ended 2025-04-30; Node 20 'Iron' ended 2026-04-30; Node 25 ended 2026-06-01. Supported lines as of October 2026: Node 22 'Jod' (maintenance LTS, EOL 2027-04-30), Node 24 'Krypton' (LTS, enters maintenance 2026-10-20, EOL 2028-04-30) and Node 26 (Current since 2026-05-05, LTS from 2026-10-28, EOL 2029-04-30). From Node 27 the project moves to one major release per year, each becoming LTS.

Verify

node -v in CI/containers prints v22+ and the schedule at github.com/nodejs/Release shows that line as supported.
