MCP server "<name>" has a "url" but no "type"; add "type": "http" — Claude Code .mcp.json remote servers
MCP server "<name>" has a "url" but no "type"; add "type": "http" (or "sse" / "ws") to this entry
{"mcpServers": {"linear": {"type": "http", "url": "https://mcp.linear.app/mcp"}}}
Or let the CLI write it:
claude mcp add --transport http linear https://mcp.linear.app/mcp # local scope (~/.claude.json)
claude mcp add --transport http --scope project linear https://mcp.linear.app/mcp # .mcp.json, shared
claude mcp add --scope user ... # all your projects
For stdio servers put the launch command after --: claude mcp add fs -- npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem . Since v2.1.265 --transport http falls back to SSE automatically for SSE-only servers. "type": "sdk" entries are only registrable by an SDK host app.
Symptom
A remote MCP server added to .mcp.json or ~/.claude.json as {"mcpServers": {"linear": {"url": "https://mcp.linear.app/mcp"}}} never loads; Claude Code reports MCP server "linear" has a "url" but no "type"; add "type": "http" (or "sse" / "ws") to this entry.
Cause
Claude Code treats an entry with no type as a stdio server, so a url-only entry is a configuration error and is skipped. streamable-http is accepted as an alias for http. The SSE transport is deprecated.
Verify
claude mcp get linear shows it connected; /mcp lists its tools.
