## Error

```text
MCP server "<name>" has a "url" but no "type"; add "type": "http" (or "sse" / "ws") to this entry
```

## Symptom
A remote MCP server added to `.mcp.json` or `~/.claude.json` as `{"mcpServers": {"linear": {"url": "https://mcp.linear.app/mcp"}}}` never loads; Claude Code reports `MCP server "linear" has a "url" but no "type"; add "type": "http" (or "sse" / "ws") to this entry`.

## Cause
Claude Code treats an entry with no `type` as a stdio server, so a `url`-only entry is a configuration error and is skipped. `streamable-http` is accepted as an alias for `http`. The SSE transport is deprecated.

## Fix
```json
{"mcpServers": {"linear": {"type": "http", "url": "https://mcp.linear.app/mcp"}}}
```
Or let the CLI write it:
```bash
claude mcp add --transport http linear https://mcp.linear.app/mcp            # local scope (~/.claude.json)
claude mcp add --transport http --scope project linear https://mcp.linear.app/mcp  # .mcp.json, shared
claude mcp add --scope user ...                                               # all your projects
```
For stdio servers put the launch command after `--`: `claude mcp add fs -- npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem .` Since v2.1.265 `--transport http` falls back to SSE automatically for SSE-only servers. `"type": "sdk"` entries are only registrable by an SDK host app.

## Verify
`claude mcp get linear` shows it connected; `/mcp` lists its tools.
