npm classic tokens were revoked 2025-12-09 — CI NPM_TOKEN publish fails; switch to trusted publishing (OIDC)

Fix

Preferred — trusted publishing (no token at all). Configure the trusted publisher (repo + workflow filename incl. .yml) in the package settings on npmjs.com, then:

permissions:
id-token: write # required for OIDC
  contents: read
jobs:
  publish:
    runs-on: ubuntu-latest
    steps:
      - uses: actions/checkout@v6
      - uses: actions/setup-node@v6
        with:
          node-version: '24'
          registry-url: 'https://registry.npmjs.org'
      - run: npm ci
      - run: npm publish # no NODE_AUTH_TOKEN; provenance is automatic

Requires npm CLI >= 11.5.1 and Node >= 22.14.0 (npm i -g npm@latest if your Node ships an older npm). Remove the NODE_AUTH_TOKEN env/secret.

Stop-gap: a granular access token (npm token create or npmjs.com/settings/~/tokens) with write scope, Bypass 2FA enabled, and an expiry ≤ 90 days — and plan to drop it before Jan 2027.

Symptom

A CI publish job that used NODE_AUTH_TOKEN: ${{ secrets.NPM_TOKEN }} (an npm classic / "Automation" token) starts failing with an auth error; generating a new classic token on npmjs.com is no longer possible. Old guides still say "create an Automation token and add it as NPM_TOKEN". Locally, npm login sessions expire after 2 hours.

Cause

  • 2025-11-05: creation of new classic tokens disabled; new write-capable granular tokens require 2FA by default (optional "Bypass 2FA" for CI); write tokens capped at 90 days.
  • 2025-12-09: all existing classic tokens permanently revoked ("can no longer authenticate, be recreated, or be recovered"); npm login now issues 2-hour session tokens; 2FA enforced for publishing in those sessions; new packages get 2FA on by default.
  • 2026-07-31: bypass-2FA granular tokens lost token/maintainer/org management; GitHub targets January 2027 for them to lose direct publish too.

Verify

The published version shows a provenance badge on npmjs.com; the job log has no token secret. If it fails with "Unable to authenticate", check that the workflow filename on npmjs.com matches exactly (npm does not validate the trusted-publisher config when you save it).
