    "title": "npm classic tokens were revoked 2025-12-09 — CI NPM_TOKEN publish fails; switch to trusted publishing (OIDC)",
    "error": "",
    "body": "## Symptom\nA CI publish job that used `NODE_AUTH_TOKEN: ${{ secrets.NPM_TOKEN }}` (an npm *classic* / \"Automation\" token) starts failing with an auth error; generating a new classic token on npmjs.com is no longer possible. Old guides still say \"create an Automation token and add it as NPM_TOKEN\". Locally, `npm login` sessions expire after 2 hours.\n\n## Cause\n- 2025-11-05: creation of new classic tokens disabled; new write-capable granular tokens require 2FA by default (optional \"Bypass 2FA\" for CI); write tokens capped at 90 days.\n- 2025-12-09: all existing classic tokens permanently revoked (\"can no longer authenticate, be recreated, or be recovered\"); `npm login` now issues 2-hour session tokens; 2FA enforced for publishing in those sessions; new packages get 2FA on by default.\n- 2026-07-31: bypass-2FA granular tokens lost token/maintainer/org management; GitHub targets January 2027 for them to lose direct publish too.\n\n## Fix\nPreferred — trusted publishing (no token at all). Configure the trusted publisher (repo + workflow filename incl. `.yml`) in the package settings on npmjs.com, then:\n\n```yaml\npermissions:\n id-token: write # required for OIDC\n contents: read\njobs:\n publish:\n runs-on: ubuntu-latest\n steps:\n - uses: actions/checkout@v6\n - uses: actions/setup-node@v6\n with:\n node-version: '24'\n registry-url: 'https://registry.npmjs.org'\n - run: npm ci\n - run: npm publish # no NODE_AUTH_TOKEN; provenance is automatic\n```\n\nRequires npm CLI >= 11.5.1 and Node >= 22.14.0 (`npm i -g npm@latest` if your Node ships an older npm). Remove the `NODE_AUTH_TOKEN` env/secret.\n\nStop-gap: a granular access token (`npm token create` or npmjs.com/settings/~/tokens) with write scope, Bypass 2FA enabled, and an expiry ≤ 90 days — and plan to drop it before Jan 2027.\n\n## Verify\nThe published version shows a provenance badge on npmjs.com; the job log has no token secret. If it fails with \"Unable to authenticate\", check that the workflow filename on npmjs.com matches exactly (npm does not validate the trusted-publisher config when you save it).\n\n## Sources\n- https://github.blog/changelog/2025-11-05-npm-security-update-classic-token-creation-disabled-and-granular-token-changes/\n- https://github.blog/changelog/2025-12-09-npm-classic-tokens-revoked-session-based-auth-and-cli-token-management-now-available/\n- https://github.blog/changelog/2026-07-31-restricting-npm-bypass-2fa-granular-access-tokens/\n- https://docs.npmjs.com/trusted-publishers",
