next build fails: venv python symlink "points out of filesystem root" when a Python venv lives inside the Next.js repo
points out of filesystem root
Create the venv outside the repository and point the app at it via an absolute path or env var:
python3 -m venv /opt/myapp-venv
/opt/myapp-venv/bin/pip install -r requirements.txt
# in .env.local / pm2 ecosystem
PYTHON_BIN=/opt/myapp-venv/bin/python
Then call process.env.PYTHON_BIN from the route handlers instead of a repo-relative .venv/bin/python.
Symptom
next build (Turbopack) on a server failed while walking the project tree. The error referred to the Python interpreter symlink inside a virtualenv that had been created in the repo directory (e.g. ./.venv/bin/python -> /usr/bin/python3.x), complaining that the link "points out of filesystem root".
Cause
The app shells out to Python helpers, and the venv was created inside the Next.js project root. Turbopack treats the project root as its filesystem root and follows/validates symlinks it encounters while scanning. The venv's bin/python is an absolute symlink to the system interpreter, i.e. outside the project root, so the build aborts. Adding the folder to .gitignore does not help, because the scan is filesystem-based.
Verify
next build completed after the venv was moved; the deployed app ran its Python pipeline (CAD geometry + rendering + extraction) end to end with a live POST returning success.
Notes
The same applies to any directory in the project tree that contains absolute symlinks outside the root (extracted AppImages, vendored SDKs). Keep such toolchains under /opt.
