TypeScript 6.0+: tsc output lands in dist/src/index.js instead of dist/index.js — rootDir now defaults to tsconfig dir
Set it explicitly:
{
"compilerOptions": {
"outDir": "./dist",
+ "rootDir": "./src"
},
"include": ["src"]
}
Use "../src"-style paths if the tsconfig lives in a subfolder and references files outside it.
Symptom
After upgrading to TypeScript 6.0/7.0, tsc emits ./dist/src/index.js instead of ./dist/index.js, so package.json main/bin/start scripts point to a missing file.
Cause
TypeScript 6.0 (2026-03-23) changed the rootDir default: it is now always the directory containing tsconfig.json, instead of being inferred as the common directory of all input files. TypeScript 7.0 keeps this default.
Verify
rm -rf dist && npx tsc && ls dist shows index.js at the top level.
