Playwright 1.57 removed page.accessibility — use toMatchAriaSnapshot() or @axe-core/playwright
For tree/structure assertions, use ARIA snapshots:
// before
const tree = await page.accessibility.snapshot()
expect(tree).toMatchObject({ role: 'WebArea' })
// after
await expect(page.getByRole('navigation')).toMatchAriaSnapshot(`
- navigation:
- link "Home"
`)
// or read it as YAML
const yaml = await page.locator('body').ariaSnapshot()
For a11y violations, use Axe:
import AxeBuilder from '@axe-core/playwright'
const results = await new AxeBuilder({ page }).analyze()
expect(results.violations).toEqual([])
Symptom
After upgrading to Playwright 1.57+, await page.accessibility.snapshot() fails because page.accessibility is undefined. TypeScript reports that the property does not exist on Page. Older answers and generated tests still use page.accessibility.snapshot() to assert on the accessibility tree.
Cause
Playwright 1.57 (2025-11-25) removed page.accessibility, which had been deprecated for 3 years. For accessibility testing the release notes point to libraries such as Axe. The same release switched Chromium to Chrome for Testing builds (headed uses chrome, headless uses chrome-headless-shell) and moved the Docker images to Node 24.
Verify
npx tsc --noEmit shows no accessibility errors, and npx playwright test passes.
