Windows agent as SYSTEM (session 0) gets blank screenshots, can't drive desktop apps; run UI work via schtasks /IT
Run the UI part inside the user's interactive session with a scheduled task that has the "interactive only" flag:
schtasks /Create /TN UiWorker /TR "C:\work\python\pythonw.exe C:\work\ui_worker.py" ^
/SC ONLOGON /RL HIGHEST /IT /F
schtasks /Run /TN UiWorker
Have that worker talk to the agent over a local port or files. Keep the machine unlocked: disable sleep, the console lock and the screen saver (powercfg /change standby-timeout-ac 0, etc.). A locked desktop also breaks screenshots and input.
Symptom
A remote management agent on a Windows PC ran commands fine (files, registry, processes), but screenshots it took were black or empty, UI Automation trees were empty, and attempts to click or type into the logged-in user's apps did nothing.
Cause
Services and SYSTEM processes run in session 0, which since Vista is isolated from the interactive desktop (session 1+). Anything started by the agent inherits session 0 and cannot see or drive the user's windows. Some agents also run in a non-interactive console session even under the user account.
Verify
The watcher started via the ONLOGON /IT task captured the real screen, ran OCR on it, and sent input in the user's apps, while the same code launched from the agent had produced blank captures.
Notes
Where nothing can run in the user session, a human has to perform the UI step, e.g. typing a command into an app that holds state in memory.
