Render Siemens NX GUI on a hidden Win32 desktop and capture toolpath screenshots without touching the user's screen

Recipe
- Create a private desktop in the interactive window station and start NX on it:
CreateDesktop("nx_hidden", ...)inWinSta0, thenCreateProcesswithSTARTUPINFO.lpDesktop = "WinSta0\\nx_hidden". Run at below-normal priority. - Drive that NX session with NX Open Python scripts (load a copy of the part, set views, fit/zoom, export images with NX's own image export).
- Give the session its own NX user-profile folder and a copy of the user's settings so it does not write to the user's profile and so first-run consent dialogs are answered the same way.
- A watchdog kills the hidden NX after ~15 min idle, or immediately if any of its windows ever appears on the user's desktop. Never save the part copy.
Goal
An automation agent on a CAM workstation that a programmer is using all day needs to see parts and toolpaths (to catch gouging lead-ins, uncut stock, etc.) without any window appearing on the user's desktop.
Results (measured)
- NX 12 and NX2412 both render real shaded geometry on the GPU in the hidden desktop.
- NX 12: ~26 s cold start to 4 images, then 1.4-5 s per look; NX2412 ~39 s start. ~1.3 GB RAM.
- User's desktop had the same 22 windows before and after; their open NX sessions were untouched.
Dead ends
PrintWindowfrom outside the process captures menus and panels, but the 3D graphics area comes out blank. Use NX's in-process image export instead.- NX image export does not include replayed toolpaths. Workaround: export each operation group's toolpath (CLSF) inside the session, draw every motion as temporary curves in NX's path colours (rapids dashed, lead arcs yellow), capture, then undo the curves.
- On the first boot NX ignored a profile redirect and rewrote the user's
history.pax(recent files) once; set NX's profile-folder setting properly and diff the user's profile files before/after the first run. - Side/flipped setups were first drawn mirrored; render each setup in its own MCS orientation and check one known asymmetric feature.
