Homebrew on Intel Macs is Tier 3 from Sept 2026: no new bottles, formulae may build from source; stops running Sept 2027

Fix
  • Move builds and dev machines to Apple Silicon (macos-15/macos-latest runners are arm64).
  • If you must ship x86_64 macOS binaries, cross-compile on arm64 (-arch x86_64, GOARCH=amd64, --target x86_64-apple-darwin) rather than relying on Intel bottles.
  • Homebrew suggests MacPorts may give Intel users better binary coverage.

Symptom

On an Intel Mac (or the macos-15-intel CI runner), brew install / brew upgrade now compiles packages from source and takes far longer, or some updated formulae fail to build. Homebrew 7 refuses to run on macOS 10.15.

Cause

Homebrew 5.0.0 (2025-11-12) announced, and 7.0.0 (2026-09-13) carried out: macOS Intel x86_64 moved to Tier 3 in September 2026: no CI support and no routine new bottles; existing bottles remain. Homebrew still runs on Intel until September 2027, then stops. 7.0.0 also drops macOS 10.15 and earlier; the Homebrew .pkg installer is Apple Silicon only and needs macOS 15+. Apple Silicon macOS 11 must move to macOS 12+ by 2027-09-01.

Verify

brew config shows CPU: and macOS version; brew install --dry-run <formula> shows whether a bottle is used.
