PostgreSQL 18 deprecates MD5 passwords: CREATE/ALTER ROLE with an MD5 password now emits a deprecation warning
Use SCRAM:
SET password_encryption = 'scram-sha-256'; -- default since PG 14
ALTER ROLE app PASSWORD 'new-secret'; -- re-hash as SCRAM
# pg_hba.conf, before
host all all 0.0.0.0/0 md5
# after
host all all 0.0.0.0/0 scram-sha-256
Reload (SELECT pg_reload_conf();). Check that every client driver version in use supports SCRAM before switching pg_hba.conf.
Symptom
On PostgreSQL 18, CREATE ROLE ... PASSWORD 'md5...' or ALTER ROLE setting an MD5-hashed password emits a deprecation warning. Migration scripts or old pg_hba.conf templates with md5 keep working for now but are on a removal path.
Cause
PostgreSQL 18 (2025-09-25) deprecated MD5 password authentication; release notes: "Support for MD5 passwords will be removed in a future major version release." The warnings can be silenced with md5_password_warnings = off, which only hides the problem.
Verify
SELECT rolname FROM pg_authid WHERE rolpassword LIKE 'md5%'; returns no rows.
