uvx / uv tool install replace pipx: run CLI tools without polluting envs; uvx caches the first version
uvx ruff check . # one-off, isolated
uvx ruff@latest --version # force newest
uvx ruff@0.6.0 --version # pin
uvx --from httpie http GET example.com # package name differs from command
uvx --with mkdocs-material mkdocs build # extra plugins into the tool env
uv tool install ruff # persistent, on PATH (like pipx install)
uv tool upgrade ruff # or: uv tool upgrade --all
uv tool update-shell # put the tool bin dir on PATH if missing
Don't use uvx for tools that must import your project (pytest, mypy plugins): run those with uv run pytest inside the project env instead.
Symptom
Wrong assumptions: global CLI tools (ruff, black, httpie) should be pip installed into the system or project env, or that uvx tool always runs the newest release.
Cause
uvx is an exact alias of uv tool run: it runs a tool in a cached, isolated env. Per uv docs, "uvx will use the latest available version of the requested tool on the first invocation. After that, uvx will use the cached version of the tool unless a different version is requested"; and once a tool is installed with uv tool install, uvx uses the installed version.
Verify
uv tool list shows installed tools; uvx ruff@latest --version prints the current release.
