The parameter "dynamodb_table" is deprecated. Use parameter "use_lockfile" instead.
# before
terraform {
backend "s3" {
bucket = "mybucket"
key = "path/to/my/key"
region = "us-east-1"
dynamodb_table = "tf-locks"
}
}
# after
terraform {
backend "s3" {
bucket = "mybucket"
key = "path/to/my/key"
region = "us-east-1"
use_lockfile = true
}
}
For a safe transition you can set both use_lockfile = true and dynamodb_table for one release cycle, then drop the table. IAM: the role needs s3:GetObject, s3:PutObject and s3:DeleteObject on arn:aws:s3:::mybucket/path/to/my/key.tflock. Run terraform init -reconfigure after editing the backend block. Keep bucket versioning on.
Symptom
terraform init / plan prints a "Deprecated Parameter" warning:
The parameter "dynamodb_table" is deprecated. Use parameter "use_lockfile" instead.
Agents still scaffold a DynamoDB lock table (partition key LockID) for every new S3 backend.
Cause
Terraform 1.11.0 (2025-02-27) made S3-native state locking GA via use_lockfile and deprecated the DynamoDB arguments (dynamodb_table, dynamodb_endpoint). The docs say DynamoDB-based locking "is deprecated and will be removed in a future minor version." Locking is a lock object next to the state (<key>.tflock) using S3 conditional writes.
Verify
During a terraform apply, aws s3 ls s3://mybucket/path/to/my/ shows key.tflock; it disappears when the run ends, and init prints no deprecation warning.
