React 19: useFormState from react-dom is deprecated — use useActionState from 'react' (returns isPending too)
- import { useFormState } from 'react-dom';
- const [state, formAction] = useFormState(action, initialState);
+ import { useActionState } from 'react';
+ const [state, formAction, isPending] = useActionState(action, initialState);
async function action(previousState, formData) {
const error = await updateName(formData.get('name'));
return error ?? null;
}
// <form action={formAction}> ... <button disabled={isPending}>Save</button>

Symptom
An agent writes import { useFormState } from 'react-dom' (the Canary/Next 14 era API) in a React 19 / Next.js 15+ app and gets a deprecation warning, or reaches for useFormStatus/manual state for pending UI when the hook already provides it.
Cause
In React 19 (stable 2024-12-05) ReactDOM.useFormState was renamed to React.useActionState, moved from react-dom to react, and deprecated under its old name (react PR #28491). The new hook also returns a third value, isPending. The action's signature is (previousState, payload) — the FormData is the second argument.
Verify
No useFormState imports remain; the form shows pending state via isPending and no deprecation warning is logged.
