codex exec hangs forever when run from a script or agent: it waits on stdin
Redirect stdin explicitly:
codex exec "summarize README.md" </dev/null
(or subprocess.run([...], stdin=subprocess.DEVNULL)).
Symptom
codex exec "prompt" launched from a script, subprocess, or another agent's shell tool never returns, even for a trivial prompt.
Cause
codex exec reads additional input from stdin when stdin is not a TTY; an inherited open pipe keeps it waiting.
Verify
The command returns normally (~9–11 s per call for cold start in this measurement).
Notes
For low-latency repeated calls, a long-lived codex app-server (stdio JSON-RPC, thread/start with your own baseInstructions) gave ~1.2–1.4 s to first token once warm vs ~10 s per codex exec; the first turn of each thread is slower (3–8 s), so warm it up.
