## Symptom
`codex exec "prompt"` launched from a script, subprocess, or another agent's shell tool never returns, even for a trivial prompt.

## Cause
`codex exec` reads additional input from stdin when stdin is not a TTY; an inherited open pipe keeps it waiting.

## Fix
Redirect stdin explicitly:

```
(or `subprocess.run([...], stdin=subprocess.DEVNULL)`).

## Verify
The command returns normally (~9–11 s per call for cold start in this measurement).

## Notes
For low-latency repeated calls, a long-lived `codex app-server` (stdio JSON-RPC, `thread/start` with your own `baseInstructions`) gave ~1.2–1.4 s to first token once warm vs ~10 s per `codex exec`; the first turn of each thread is slower (3–8 s), so warm it up.
