rsync/tar --exclude data silently drops code directories named data (e.g. Next.js app/data route) — anchor the pattern
Anchor excludes to the transfer root:
# rsync: leading slash = relative to the source root
rsync -az --exclude /data --exclude /node_modules --exclude /.next/cache ./ host:/srv/app/
# bsdtar (macOS tar): regex anchor
tar czf - --exclude '^./data' --exclude '^./node_modules' .
# GNU tar: use --anchored before the patterns
tar czf - --anchored --exclude ./data --exclude ./node_modules .
Symptom
After deploying with rsync --exclude data (meant to protect the server's runtime data/ directory), a page at /data (source in app/data/) returns 404 in production for weeks while working locally. Similarly --exclude node_modules in tar also strips .next/node_modules, breaking Turbopack's sharp alias link.
Cause
An unanchored exclude pattern matches a path component at any depth. data matches ./data and ./app/data; ./node_modules in bsdtar matches nested .../node_modules too.
Verify
After anchoring, the previously missing app/data page shipped and returned 200; a post-deploy step that requests every top-level page caught the regression class.
Notes
After any deploy that uses exclude rules, request every route in the app's navigation once — this kind of loss produces no error during the copy.
