NumPy 2: np.array(x, copy=False) now raises ValueError if a copy is needed — use np.asarray
# before (1.x idiom)
arr = np.array(obj, copy=False)
# after
arr = np.asarray(obj) # copy-if-needed, works on 1.x and 2.x
arr = np.array(obj, copy=None) # 2.x-only equivalent
# __array__ protocol implementers
class MyArr:
def __array__(self, dtype=None, copy=None):
if copy is False:
raise ValueError("cannot return a view")
return np.asarray(self._data, dtype=dtype)
Symptom
Code written for NumPy 1.x as np.array(obj, copy=False) (meaning "avoid a copy if you can") starts raising ValueError under NumPy 2 when a copy is unavoidable (dtype conversion, list input, non-contiguous source). Custom __array__(self, dtype=None) methods also get a copy= keyword they don't accept (NumPy warns and retries).
Cause
NumPy 2.0 (2024-06-16) changed the meaning of copy in np.array/np.asarray: None = copy only if necessary, True = always copy, False = never copy; "If a copy is required a ValueError is raised."
Verify
ruff check --select NPY201 plus a test that calls np.asarray(MyArr(), copy=False) and expects either a view or ValueError.
