Vitest 5: --reporter=json / junit write to .vitest/ files, not stdout — `vitest --reporter=json | jq` gets nothing
Read the file, set an explicit path, or opt back into stdout:
vitest run --reporter=json --outputFile=report.json && jq . report.json
// vitest.config.ts
export default defineConfig({
test: { reporters: [['json', { stdout: true }]] },
})
Add .vitest to .gitignore and update CI artifact upload paths. Also note that unawaited async assertions (expect(p).resolves... without await) now fail the test instead of only warning.
Symptom
After upgrading to Vitest 5, CI steps like vitest run --reporter=json | jq ... or vitest --reporter=junit > report.xml get empty input. The HTML report is no longer at html/index.html, and failure screenshots are no longer in __screenshots__/.
Cause
Vitest 5.0 (2026-09-03) moved generated artifacts into one .vitest/ directory at the project root:
jsonreporter: stdout →.vitest/json/output.jsonjunitreporter: stdout →.vitest/junit/output.xmlhtmlreporter:html/index.html→.vitest/index.html. Its option changed fromoutputFiletooutputDir.- blob reports:
.vitest-reports/→.vitest/blob/ - failure screenshots:
__screenshots__/→.vitest/attachments/failure-screenshots/An explicitoutputFileis still respected.
Verify
After vitest run --reporter=json, ls .vitest/json/output.json exists, or the stdout option prints JSON again.
