## Symptom
A remote MCP server built on the 2025-03-26 auth model (the MCP server acting as its own authorization server, or tokens accepted without audience checks) doesn't interoperate with current clients, or accepts tokens minted for other services.

## Cause
2025-06-18 classified MCP servers as OAuth Resource Servers that publish protected resource metadata pointing to their authorization server, and required MCP clients to implement Resource Indicators (RFC 8707) "to prevent malicious servers from obtaining access tokens." 2025-11-25 aligned PRM discovery with RFC 9728 (`WWW-Authenticate` optional, fallback to `.well-known`), added OpenID Connect Discovery for AS discovery, incremental scope consent via `WWW-Authenticate`, and Client ID Metadata Documents as the recommended client registration.

## Fix
- Server: serve `/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource` naming your authorization server; return 401 with `WWW-Authenticate` pointing at it; validate token audience = your resource URL.
- Client: include `resource=<MCP server URL>` in authorization and token requests; prefer Client ID Metadata Documents over Dynamic Client Registration (DCR is Deprecated as of 2026-07-28).

## Verify
Tokens for your MCP server carry its URL as audience; a token issued for another resource is rejected.
