## Error

```text
`$:` is not allowed in runes mode, use `$derived` or `$effect` instead
```

## Symptom
Svelte 5 compiler error `legacy_reactive_statement_invalid`:
```
`$:` is not allowed in runes mode, use `$derived` or `$effect` instead
```
This happens in a component that uses any rune and also has a Svelte 4 reactive statement such as `$: doubled = count * 2`. A related mistake: in runes mode a plain top-level `let count = 0` is no longer reactive.

## Cause
Svelte 5 (2024-10-22) replaced implicit reactivity with runes. State is declared with `$state()`, values computed from other state with `$derived()`, and side effects with `$effect()`. `$effect` runs at a different time from `$:`: after the DOM updates, with dependencies tracked at runtime.

## Fix
```svelte
<!-- before (Svelte 4) -->
<script>
  let count = 0;
  $: double = count * 2;
  $: if (count > 5) alert('Count is too high!');
</script>
<!-- after (Svelte 5) -->
<script>
  let count = $state(0);
  const double = $derived(count * 2);
  $effect(() => {
    if (count > 5) alert('Count is too high!');
  });
</script>
```
Use `$derived` for values (the usual case) and `$effect` only for side effects. For multi-statement derivations use `$derived.by(() => { ... })`.

## Verify
`npx svelte-check` passes, and the UI updates when `count` changes.
