## Error

```text
TypeError: Invalid value '2.5' for dtype 'str'. Value should be a string or missing value, got 'float' instead.
```

## Symptom
After upgrading to pandas 3.0:
- `ser.dtype == "object"` checks for text columns return `False` (dtype prints as `str`).
- Assigning a non-string into a text column raises `TypeError: Invalid value '2.5' for dtype 'str'. Value should be a string or missing value, got 'float' instead.`
- `None` in a string column comes back as `NaN`.
- Passing a string column's dtype to NumPy (`np.issubdtype`, `dtype=`) fails: it is a pandas extension dtype, not an `np.dtype`.

## Cause
pandas 3.0.0 (2026-01-21) enables a dedicated string dtype by default (PDEP-14), backed by PyArrow if installed, else NumPy object. It only holds strings or missing values; the missing sentinel is always `np.nan`.

## Fix
```python
# before
if ser.dtype == "object": ...
df.select_dtypes(include=["object"])
# after (works on pandas 2.x and 3.x)
from pandas.api.types import is_string_dtype
if is_string_dtype(ser.dtype): ...
df.select_dtypes(include=["object", "string"])
pd.isna(x)                       # instead of `x is None`
# a column that must hold mixed Python objects
ser = ser.astype("object"); ser[1] = 2.5
```
To preview on pandas 2.x: `pd.options.future.infer_string = True`.

## Verify
`pd.Series(["a"]).dtype` prints `str` on 3.x; your test suite passes on 2.3 with `future.infer_string = True`.
