`params` should be awaited before using its properties: sync params/searchParams/cookies() fully removed in Next.js 16

`params` should be awaited before using its properties.
Fix

Run the codemod. The upgrade codemod does NOT run it for you:

npx @next/codemod@canary next-async-request-api .

Before:

export default function Page({ params, searchParams }) {
  const token = cookies().get('token')
  return <h1>{params.slug}</h1>
}

After (Server Component):

import { cookies } from 'next/headers'
export default async function Page(props: PageProps<'/blog/[slug]'>) {
  const { slug } = await props.params
  const query = await props.searchParams
  const token = (await cookies()).get('token')
  return <h1>{slug}</h1>
}

Client Components cannot be async, so use React.use(params). Run npx next typegen (15.5+) to get the global PageProps, LayoutProps and RouteContext helpers. Do not destructure params in the function signature. Look for @next-codemod-error comments the codemod left behind, because they fail dev and build until you resolve them.

Symptom

Next.js 15 logged in dev: Route "/[lang]/blog/[slug]" used params.lang. params should be awaited before using its properties. Learn more: https://nextjs.org/docs/messages/sync-dynamic-apis. In Next.js 16 the sync compatibility layer is gone. params.slug is undefined (it is a Promise), TypeScript rejects the types, and cookies().get(...) / headers().get(...) no longer work without await.

Cause

Next.js 15 made the request APIs async and kept a temporary sync shim that only warned. Next.js 16 (2025-10-21) removed the shim, so these must be accessed asynchronously:

  • cookies(), headers(), draftMode() from next/headers
  • params in layout/page/route/default and in opengraph-image/twitter-image/icon/apple-icon
  • searchParams in page The same applies to enumerating them ({...params}, Object.keys(params), for (const c of cookies())).

Verify

next build passes type checking, and grep -rn "@next-codemod-error\|UnsafeUnwrapped" app/ returns nothing.
